low protien

Hi i have a small 4.5lb maltese/yorkie mix. He was the smallest of the litter. The vet detected he had a heart  murmmur as well. His levels seem to be really low protien. Hes on a low protein diet. He's losing it through urine he believes. The vet told me he would not live long, however my dog shows no symptoms. No bowel problems. He is a happy playful dog. He had one episode last year where he retained fluid in his belly but after some meds it went down.
What am i really looking at here as far as his future? The vet says its the worse case hes ever seen and that hes really losing a lot of protein. If anyone can shed any light i would appreciate it. Any experiences as well would be helpful.

Do you mean PLE which can be found in the Yorkie breed, for one.  If so, do a Google search and read up on it.
I don't know that much about other then I think a diet with less then 20 fat and low fibre is recommended.  Some of the hypoallergenic foods may fit that bill.  Sometimes, vitamin supplements and diuretics are needed.
Sorry, I am unable to give much more advice but hope you can find some answers.
