I know how helpless you must have felt and how you would have given anything to help him. I might be wrong but it sounds very much as if he suffered an acute heart failure.

I don't think there was very much you could have done, apart from what you did for him. You were there for him at the end, you were together and must have comforted him in many ways, even though his pain at the end was so acute, and there was nothing you could do. But it counted for so much that you were there- you held him in your arms.

He had love. He was very fortunate to be with someone as caring and loving as you.

There is nothing like the loss of a dog.....because they are the truest friends, they are so full of love for us.
Your pain is really raw at the moment. As the weeks pass it will become easier to bear. In my case, although in 2 years after his passing I eventually "got used" to the death of my dog, and his absence, only my Misty really healed my heart and made things new.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss.  My cat of 20yrs passed in my arms with a similar howl.  To this day I will never forget as she looked at me to somehow help her.  This was many years ago.  With each day, I hope the pain eases and you are able to recall and be comforted by Duke's memories.  I still think my cat's going to greet me at the door or jump up on my bed at times, and when it doesn't happen I am comforted with her memories knowing she was part of our family, like your Duke.

I have no words to express my sadness regarding your loss.

Know that we are all here for you, and truly feel your pain. As fellow animal havers & lovers, everyone in this forum knows what it is to love & lose, and we are hurting with you.

Be strong (easier said than done), and know that we're all here for you in your time of loss.

Sweetheart, I am so very sorry. You are not alone, you are at least welcome here, and can come in any time to talk to us.
In 1999 I lost so many loved ones, including my husband and then my dog too. I felt terribly alone. So I know a little of what you must be going through.

There are no words that seem adequate at this point.  I am so very sorry for your loss.
