newborn puppy

I have a newborn puppy and his mother won't have anything to do with him. He was born yesterday and we have to hold is mom down for him to eat. Unfortunately we don't know how long to let him eat. He over ate yesterday and it came back up his nose. Now he can't stop sneezing. Is there anything we can do to help him?

I would take him to the vet as soon as possible, he won't live long without the proper amount of food.  Until you get him there, if the mother won't let him nurse and he isn't eating, get a bottle and milk from your pet store or WalMart,(they would be open all night) and see if it tells on the package how much and how often to feed him.  If not, maybe you could find out online.  You'll also have to rub the puppies butt and genitals with possibly a wet warm cotton ball or whatever, gently.  This will stimulate him to pee and poop, he won't do it on his own.  Try to keep him warm if the mother won't stay with him, possibly a warm, not hot, water bottle.  Also, don't feed him on his back, and try to keep his head elevated, maybe it won't come back up his nose that way.  After he eats, LIGHTLY pat him on the back to try to get him to burp.  Good Luck, let us know how you make out.

Most babies will eat until there full. When they are nursing it is really hard to say how long. You could try asking your vet and see what they say.How long does the baby want to nurse each time?

Hope your puppy is doing OK now.  Canned goat's milk is a great alternative for puppies who are rejected by their mothers.  A friend of mine kept an entire litter of rotties alive by bottle-feeding goat's milk every 2 to 3 hours.  The mother not only rejected them, but tried to kill them.  Unfortunately, this behavior happens sometimes.  Other times the mother rejects a pup because something is very wrong with the puppy and she knows it won't live.
