not eating

not eating

i have a dog under a vets care - he is on vacation.  she has cancer - just diagnoced, 3-4 weeks ago, tumor on her upper right leg.
she was on Deramaxx for pain and Mirtazapine for appetite, but for the last 2 days - is NOT eating anything, and can't keep anything we force down... She's lost appetite since she was put out for her exray, 3 weeks ago, but the last two days - she's not eaten or drank anything.  SHe is so weak, she can't even walk this morning.  My vet is back tomorrow morning.  He said last week, if she continued to deteriorate, we should put her on steroids...  Question is, what can we do TODAY, to keep her as comfortable as possible, before we get her to the vet tomorrow?  She looks at us very sadly - and then sometimes, a bit "crazed," which i think is because she is so starved and dehydrated.  Please advise?  Thank you

Have you tried canned chicken soup, if she would eat it she would at least be getting some liquids.  Also, onion free baby food.  I'm sure someone else will answer with better ideas.  She has to have water, if necessary you might have to get a dropper or turkey baster and slowly squirt some in her mouth and see if she keeps that down.  Good Luck.

Hello & welcome...Oh my, I'm sorry to hear about your dog...Was she eating before the medication was given? The Deramaxx may be making her Nauseated.....Have you tried to miss a dose to see if she feels better?

What are you trying to feed her? She needs some liquids to curb the dehydration.....You  need to start syringing something like Pedialyte in her.....You can purchase this at any grocery store or discount center......Get a Turkey baster at the same time, to feed her with.....You can actually get some babyfood too, to also syringe into her mouth....

That's all I can think of......I'm sorry....I do think this will hold her over to tomorrow....Good luck and please come back with updates.....I'll be thinking about you both.....Karla

She may take a little honey or maple syrup mixed into water. If she will take this it will help her energy. She may not drink it out of a dish. But you could try putting a little on the palm of your hand and mixing a little water with it, see if she licks it up, then repeat a few times.
After my dog had surgery, she must have felt a little queasy. She wouldn't eat or drink. I did this for her, and it seemed to perk up her energy. And only an hour or so later, she ate some food.
You could also try her with some wholemeal toast (small pieces, like treats -no butter, just dry) Dogs willl often eat this when they haven't much appetite for food.
