odd smell

we have just noticed a strange smell from our miniature jack russel ***** she is about a year old,
the brown stain she leaves on your lap is very much like rust. we thought it was similar to the redish brown water that comes from the old mine workings in our area ie redcar & cleveland uk.
      anybody any ideas as to the cause would be very grateful for any advice.

Is she spayed?

Does she drag her rear end around on the carpet?

I'd about bet money she has impacted anal glands that are so full they are leaking.  This is a very common problem in dogs and easily dealt with.  Take her to your vet and have him check her anal glands and evacuate them if necessary.  You'll want to make sure you stay on top of this every time she's at the vet.  If not treated, the nasty stuff in the glands can eventually cause a very painful abscess and infection.
