hi my dog molly who 12 years old has been dignosed has having early signs of pyometra.firstly we took her to a vet because of a season which we thought was going on to long/and more than usual amount of blood.the vet sugested antibiotics .as she thought of the age of the dog and the early stage of the illnes .can you help as when the medicine should kick in as the bleeding hasnt stopped thanks in advance

Hi Molly I have a 14 year old Akita with a open cervix pyometra.  The vet treats her with antibiotics whenever she has an infection and is excreting pus.  In the case of the mastiff surgery is the best procedure because she is young and strong.  Our dogs being that they are much older would most likely not survive that surgery.  There is also another treatment called prostaglandins but my vet did not recommend it due to side effects.  How is your dog doing?

my mastiff 4 yr old just had surgery for pymetra and it was an emergency the infection from pymetra is toxic and kill the dog if it ruptures please seek another vet, they should of done x rays cbc and gave a diagnosis ,and scheduled surgery if this truley pymetra
