what causes twisted intestines

My 7 year old Lab is undergoing Twisted Intestine surgery right now and is having part of his bowel removed along with his small intestines. My question is "what causes this"?  I feed him only the best dog food. Purina One which they changed recently and I keep saying he started getting sick after he started eating it.  Please help me to understand.
Thanks

So sorry for your loss, I can relate with your story, I also lost my three year old boxer pit bull mixed to twisted intestines in which came on over nite.  The next morning rushed her to emergency where they did exploratory surgery and had to cut out 40% of her intestines and said she had a 50% chance of making it. Four days after surgery I made the decision to put her down. I will always wonder if it could of been prevented.

In addition to what Karla has said, in my own research into dog foods undertaken recently, Iams (which is very heavily advertised) made some severe errors this year. Their pet foods were recalled twice due to contamination. The first time, all stores and owners were informed by press releases and information given to news chanels. However, when they needed to recall their pet foods again, they only told large stores, and didn't release any press statements for the general public. This, presumably, was due to them having received bad publicity already earlier in the year, and so didn't want to add to the disatisfaction of pet owners by repeating the process. But this also meant that anyone that had pet food stored in their kitchen cupboards at home wouldn't know that THAT pet food was contaminated. Iams proved themselves to be unprofessional and potentially liable for pets becoming ill as a result. Tony

Here, you will find our Bad Dog Food List. These commercial dog food brands are, in our opinion, the worst dog foods on the market!

We give them a disgusted 0 Scoops!

Our personal recommendation is that you take a good look at these dog food names and memorize them.

Now!  Tuck your tail between your legs and run for the hills!

These dog foods contain the worst dog food ingredients you will find! They are comprised mainly of by-products; carcinogenic flavors and preservatives; cheap, unhealthy fillers, and ... Heaven only knows what else!

In addition, we have no respect for the philosophy of these pet food companies. In our opinion, they are clearly dedicated to their bottom line with a total disregard for the health and well-being of our beloved furry companions.

They are truly a far cry from the best dog foods available!

It is highly unlikely that any of these awful supermarket brands on our list of Bad Dog Foods will be carried or recommended by any respectable, independent dog food store.

I think they actually had a book and a movie about this very condition in dogs not too long ago. Big dogs seem to get this like Labs. Poor dogs
just get this and glad you could afford to save your dog. I feed my dogs Royal Canine which is high quality and actually have breed blends. It's more expensive, but a great dry dog food. Our pup and one year old
dog are both on it now and they are so healthy. Right diet and exercise for your dogs means so much. There are so many good ideas on here. The people are just great!

I am learning so much about the things you are talking about here. I changed my dogs from pedigree to Gravy train and my heeler is throwing up more.
Should I go back to the pedigree?

actually stomach twisting is not that unusual in large dogs, especially hunting dogs. Good you got your dog to the vet in time. Our friend lost their plott hound to this bad condition.

I didn't know you should feed dogs several times a day. We do too. We feed ours at least twice a day, but was planning on soon just feeding them once.

Not a good idea huh? Yeah.. I also wait for awhile after feeding our dogs before walking them. I don't think it's that good for them, and I just want to let their stomach settle some before a walk.

Something a batch of food doesn't come out right and pets get sick. I noticed our cats too wouldn't hardly eat a new bag of food after we got it. They just refused to eat it.
Yes, write a letter to the company, that way you have it in writing and keep at least a sample of it from that recent bag. Maybe your vet could send it off to a lab to make sure it's safe for your pet. Good luck with your pet. Hugs to your labbie. :)

You would be better off giving your dog a grain free dog food, such as Wellness, Taste of the Wild, Orijen, etc.

Purina ONE SmartBlend Lamb & Rice Formula
June 21, 2010 by admin
Filed under Latest Dog Food Reviews, Purina

This is Purina’s top of the line product, but is still a very low quality  dog food.  It contains small amounts of meatlittle meat and and an large amount of low quality grain ingredients. The by-product and fat are poor quality. Purina ONE contains additives such as menadione sodium bisulfite and caramel color, both proven to be toxic to some degree in animals. Animal digest is another extremely low grade ingredient and can include hooves, feathers, teeth and horns.

Purina ONE Ingredient Analysis
1.Lamb2.Brewers rice
3.Corn gluten meal
4.Whole grain corn
5.Poultry by-product meal
Lamb is a good meat source, but it is the only meat ingredient. When the water is removed for processing it losses at least 70% of its mass, moving it down the ingredient list.

Brewer’s rice, is a low quality grade grain and all of the nutrients have been removed.

Corn gluten meal, is the lowest quality grade of corn you can get.

Whole grain corn, corn is hard for dogs to digest and has been linked to allergies in some dogs.

Poultry by-product meal is an extremely low grade ingredient and includes feet, neck, feathers and undeveloped eggs.

Purina ONE Ingredient List
Lamb, brewers rice, corn gluten meal, whole grain corn, poultry by-product meal, oat meal, animal fat, soy flakes, soybean meal, glycerin, animal digest, calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, salt, potassium chloride, caramel color, Vitamin E supplement, choline chloride, zinc sulfate, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, ferrous sulfate, sulfur, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, copper sulfate, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin B-12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, garlic oil, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), sodium selenite.

"Bloat" is a life-threatening situation and you must have recognized it.....Good for you....How is your lab doing? Have you heard from the Vet?

There are different theories about what causes bloat. Here they are and how to prevent it from happening:

1- Divide Daily food into 2-3 feedings...NEVER give as one whole meal.
2- Rescrict access to water for one hour before and after meals.
3- Never let your dog drink a large amount of water all at one.
4- Avoid strenuous exercise on a full stomach.

Clearly, food and water are a factor in all this....I assume the reasoning is because Basic dog food SWELLS with water in the stomach.....Heavy grain, based diets would make it worse......

Hope your guy's doing OK by now......Karla

I use the Purina One lamb and rice.  They just changed it to some chewy stuff in it.  I'm wondering if that made him sick.  I might contact the company make sure they are not getting other complaints.
