Keeping a sick client healthy

by maplecrest, May 16, 2009 01:13PM
I work at a group home that helps mentally challenged children. Without getting into specifics, I have a client whos immune system is horrible. He has downs and he gets pneumonia very often. He is on a dysphagia 2 diet and aspirates. My question is what steps can we take to avoid any more hospitalizations due to pneumonia?

this is something I don't think you want to manage, this belongs in the doctors hands, I know if this were my son that is what I would want.  He needs to be seen also by a nutrionist to see what can be done about the diet and aspirations,  is it his tongue that is causing the problem?  sounds like he needs to be on some real good anti-oxidents, to work on the immune system.   We had several adults with this problem and they installed direct feeding tubes into the abdomen.  One was found to have an esphoogeal tumor that was hindering swallowing , after surgery  he did fine. the other one may have a tongue reduction done soon, they are still discussing that.  they were on low dosages of Predisone to combat any infections.
