NT results are confusing..can anyone help?

by adgal, Jul 22, 2009 08:02PM
Hi all.  I am new here but a regular on the pregnancy 35+ forum.  I am currently 12.4 weeks pregnant and today had my nucheal translucency test.  I find the results confusing...

The nasal bone was visible and normal in appearance.  The nucheal fold was 2.1 (they told me anything under 3 is good).  In other words there were absolutely no physical markers of downs syndrome.  Based on my age (I am 40) and the blood results, they gave me a 1:13 chance of downs.  I am wondering how they can come up with a number like this given that physical appearance was normal. Everything was normal...it was measuring right where it should be, heartbeat was a strong 168bpm.  I have decided to have amnio as I prefer to know whether then wonder.  I will love my baby and know that he or she has something special to offer the world regardless of the turn out, but I feel the need to know.  I am wondering what your thoughts are based on these results?  Thanks so much for any input, I really appreciate it.

You should have received two sets of numbers. The first being based purely on your age and then the second being based with your age & the measurement of the nuchal fold combined. The 2nd set of numbers is the one you should take most notice of. With a measurement of 2.1 I'd have thought it would be a lot higher than 1:13. Well that is how things are done in the uk, things coud differ elsewhere. Good Luck with the amnio!

I believe she is correct about that.  I had a set of numbers based on my age and then with the test combined.  My numbers went up once the blood test and NT was done (combined).  Do you remember getting 2 sets of numbers.  The Trisomy 13/18 was the same way and those numbers really really went up.  But either way, everything is going to be just fine.

I did get 2 sets.  The first said risk was 1:73.  The adjusted risk is 1:13.  There were no soft physical markers, the adjustment was based on the results of the blood tests.  There was a high ratio between the free beta and the papp a (I think that's what it was called).  The nasal bone was present and nucheal fold was only 2.1.  My adjusted risk for trisonomy 13 and 18 were around 1:4000.

Like you said before this is only a screening.  Everything is going to be fine.  I pray for you all the time and I just know the Lord is going to make things perfect for you and Warren.  Keep going strong girl!
