can anyone help

i have a 7 year old son with downs syndrome and he has been self stimulating for about a year and a half, he does to restbite once a month and they know about it, but yesterday the school rang and want to seee me today because of this i dont no wot to do and am afraid of what they might say. i dont know how to deal with this, i have tried explaining its not acceptable and tried putting him to his room when he does it but nothing seems to work as he seems to forget after a few minutes what he is being punished for or the more you draaw his attention to it the more he thinks its a game and funny. if anyone knows of any ways of dealing with this please help.  thanks tracey

Well first of all masterbation (masturbation) is normal.  My son is allowed to go to his room and shut the door for private time.  If he messes with his privates anywhere other than his room I say that is for private time. Hands off!  Redirect him. Get him helping or doing something else if he isnt at home.  ALLOW him to have time alone. He will be less likly to mess around in public if he knows he can have time alone later. Geez Respite once a month!!!  thats weak.  I am allowed about 30 hours a week. I only use about 10. Then he gets training 6 hours a week at the pool or where he chooses to socialize.
