Tussive Syncope and Convulsions

It's been 10 months since onset of symptoms.

When I cough, even a little, I begin to choke and eventually pass out. Sometimes I fade to grey and maintain consciousness, other times racing disjointed thoughts accompany slight convulsions. On several occasions I have become completely syncopic, with no memory. Even clearing my throat or a little hack can set it off. I have active herpes zoster under left axial fossa. Shingles with very painful postherpetic neuralgia.

Was wondering if this is a vasovagal response, or more closely related to the shingles.

Spent 10 days at Cleveland Clinic in January and my cardiovascular system is exceptional - very strong, very efficient, better than perfect for my age. Had every test one would need, save for the one which would point out the shingles. I had symptoms for two months before I got the skin bloom.

Thanks

Were you seen at the syncope clinic while at Cleveland Clinic?  They should have been able to evaluate cough syncope there, I would think.  You can find their number here:

http://www.medhelp.org/health_pages/Neurological-Disorders/Dysautonomia-Specialists/show/717?cid=196  ;

(Their contact info is at the bottom of their syncope page, if I remember correctly.)  From what little I know of cough syncope, I think it can be related to vasalva maneuver-type changes in chest pressure.  I can probably dig up more information on it in one of the comprehensive ANS/syncope medical textbooks if you give me a few days.  I'll see what I can find if anything, but really the docs at one of the major syncope centers would be the ones to talk to since cough syncope is rather rare.  (And, ultimately, I presume you're looking for treatment, not just info right?)
