clonidine supplier...

Question for those taking Clonidine.... I'm having a hard time acquiring Clonidine, I'm in Canada and the manufacturer cannot supply my pharmacy whith what I need, I have to have the 0.025mg pills so I can combine them to take 0.050mg three times a day and 0.075mg at bed time, the last prescription they could only supply me with 0.2mg tablets, so I have to cut them into 4's to get the 0.050mg dosis, I still have some 0.025mg pills but will run out in a month, and after that I won't be able to do the bed time dosis.

So my question is, are you guys having trouble sourcing it?  do you know what would be the equivalent? what dosis are you taking?

Any info please let me know.

Thanks!

Karin

Typo up there ^ sorry.  I meant 0.005 times 4 is 0.02.  Head got too far ahead of the fingers.

Karin,

Here is the (a?) manufacturer who makes them (the 0.025 mg ones) in Canada:

http://www.apotex.com/ca/en/products/detail.asp?m=44296

Not sure if you already had that information?  It may be helpful to try contacting them and asking which pharmacies in your area they supply?

If you're willing/able to get your meds through a mail order pharmacy, the following Canadian mail order pharmacies carry the dosage you want:

http://www.canadadrugs.com/search.php?keyword=clonidine&x=0&y=0
(Your dosage is shipped from the UK; odd since I found the above Canadian manufacturer.)

http://www.adv-care.com/
(A little tricky to navigate, here's where I found it.  Click the following links on their page in this succession:  "Go shopping" (center of page next to photo)-->"Select your medication" (under "Fill New Rx Online)-->Type "Clonidine" into the search box and click yellow "Search" button-->Goes to chart with your dosage available from THREE different manufacturers (yay!) at varying prices

http://www.northdrugstore.com/
(After you search for clonidine, look under the second drop-down menu, for dixarit.)

Well, you get the point.  If you want to look for more mail order ones, you can look on Google under "canada mail order pharmacy" ... I got plenty of hits so it's just a matter of slogging through them to find which ones carry your dosage.

One final option would be the use of a compounding pharmacy to get your proper dosage made for you.  (See here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compounding_pharmacy )

But I don't think that's likely necessary given that the dosage is manufactured and available in your country.  If you do want/need to go the compounding pharmacy route, your doctor or pharmacist may be able to help you locate a pharmacist who is able to do this for you.  I've never used a compounding pharmacy so I don't know how it works exactly in terms of cost, etc.  Not that it'd likely be the same between the US and Canada either way, LOL.

I hope something in there gets you going in the right direction.  OH, one final thought.  It involves some *painful* math and even more painstaking measurements and I can't believe I'm even mentioning it, but ...

One way to make TEENY alterations in dosages such as you are seeking with the 0.02 vs. 0.025 (and I'm sooooo not in the right mind to do the math for you, so I'll just describe the general process here and not the specific measurements) is to use a pill grinder to pulverize the pill and then dissolve it in a ***precisely*** (cannot exaggerate that enough; need to use scientific equipment such as a graduated cylinder) measured quantity of water.  You then have a much larger (albeit now in a different state of matter, since it's now liquid rather than solid) "pill" to divide, and can much more accurately "cut off" the desired 0.005 mg by pouring (or getting with a dropper) the corresponding amount of liquid (as I said, you have to get the math right to know how much of the liquid this is).  Hm, off the top of my head, actually, it looks like that's just a fourth of it, huh?  I hope I'm not brain farting that.  But 0.005 times 5 is 0.02, so that looks right.  Okay, so if you crush the pill, dilute it VERY thoroughly so it's evenly distributed in some VERY carefully measured water (let's use 4 oz. as an example), then use a dropper to remove one oz. of the water, you can drink that one oz. and you will be getting 0.005 mg of the medicine.  Taken on top of one of the 0.02 mg pills, this totals the same dosage as a 0.025 pill.  As I said, it's rather impractical, but it can be done.  I would be remiss as a former chemistry student if I didn't mention it.  ;-)

Oh, and Tonya, thanks for the bump!!  I missed this one the first time around somehow!

Best,
Heiferly.
