nerve damage

Hi my wife had a bulging disc, which damaged her nerves, leading to a major op in 2007. Since then she has hardly any feeling in her left leg and foot. But can walk and drive, though suffers from leg cramp and back pain. She as had a further mri and as been told to carry on and control the pain with drug relief. My question is, will her leg feeling improve in time, or is the nerve damage probably too severe.
Thanks Ian.
