Bad throat for 6 months

Over the last six months i have been going to and from the doctor with an awful cough, difficulty swallowing anything, englarged tonsils sometimes with pus on them and enlarged glands. All my symptoms gradually getting worse. Each time iv just been given more antibiotics for tonsillitis none of which seems to help. I have reffered to the hospital to have my tonsilis taken. However when i went to the doctor last week he suggested that when i saw the consultant at the hispital they should consider throat cancer, this worrys me as i am 18, however i did used to smoke heavily and only recently quit and i am a student so i do drink alot.
The doctor suggesting cancer has really worried me, what do people think? could he be write?

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello and hope you are doing well.
Your symptoms could be due to Recurrent tonsillitis. But this is unlikely to cause loss of voice. The constant feeling of a foreign body in the throat can be due to a throat infection or sometimes a tumour. The ENT specialist will have to examine your throat to determine the cause for your symptoms.
Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
