Belching, Nausea and Post-nasal drip

Hi, I'm a 25 year old male currently suffering with month long post-nasal drip, aswell as indigestion (usually belching after eating, and intermittent nausea which is sometimes worse at night).

At first, i had a dry cough for about one week that slowly began to produce yellow phlegm in my throat after eating. Eventually my nose became congested and I noticed a lot of Post-nasal drip at nightime and throughout the day--especially after eating (at one point I was constantly spitting yellow mucus from my throat). I was put on a ten day dose of amoxicillin which was ineffective, so my doctor decided to put me on APO-FLUTICASONE, which cleared my nose but didn't help the mucus buildup in my throat. I decided to try spicy food and garlic to combat the phlegm but it did not help, and gave me burning indigestion. I continued using the nasal corticosteroid for the rest of the week which seemed to reduce the phlegm, but I noticed that i would get indigestion after eating followed by excessive belching and nausea at night.

Now I have reduced the nasal spray but the indigestion has continued for about 2.5 weeks and i seem to get nauseated at night--usually temporarily relieved by burping. I was prescribed Proton Pump Inhibitor which I have been taking for 5 days now, and am on a very basic diet for 1.5 weeks but the belching and nighttime mild nausea has not subsided.

I was tested for H. Pylori via blood test but results came back negative. I was wondering if there is any connection between the post-nasal drip, the nasal corticosteroid, the amoxicillin and my digestion problem?

Hi,

I would be glad if you can consult a gaestroenterologist rather than getting the tests prescribed by your GP.

Thanks for the response. I've taken the PPI (aciphex) for 12 days but haven't really noticed much of a difference; I seem to have more relief from Liquid maalox than from the aciphex. My GP told me to switch to omeprazole and also requisitioned a blood test for Lipase and Amylase to make sure my pancreas was not involved. I don't really have any tenderness in my abdomen, and the doctor said she didn't feel or see any abnormalities. One thing i notice is that a lot of the nausea and sometimes even the indigestion is relieved temporarily by belching--which i didn't think was typical of GERD.
Would it be worth following up with my gastrointestinal doctor?

Hi,

you are suffering from reflux esophagitis with laryngopharyngeal reflux, I would advice you to continue proton pump inhibitors as well start using metoclopramide. Drink plenty of warm water and consume your dinner at least 2 hours before you go to bed in the night.
