CONSTANT HIGH PITCHED WAIVERING TONE

I have learned to live with a mild case of tinnitus since childhood. I can't remember not hearing the high pitched tone, as background noise. When mentioned to my wife a few months ago - we've been married 38 years now - she said that when all is quiet she hears nothing, no noise, no tones of any kind, just silence. I have had this Tinnitus so long and sol consistently that I thought it was normal. Like I said I've learned to live with it and disregard it most of the time except when these is no other noise. I then mentioned it to my doctor for the first time at this year's physical and was told that the high pitched tone I hear is feedback from my brain and nervous system trying to detect a certain frequency of sound that it is not picking up thru my auditory nerves, they may have been damaged at some point in childhood. Well a couple of nights ago while repairing a chair the high pitched tone stopped!

The silence was a miravcle. I can't express how great it was to experience pure silence. Anyone have this happen and have you figured out what caused the tone to go silent for a time? The next morning when I awoke the tone was back. I'll go into the chair repair business if that's a cure.

My observations in dealing with this noise:
- It is constantly present as background noise and volume does slightly fluctuate,
- It is not stronger or louder in one ear but seems to be in my head - I don't hear voices or get strange messages from the mother ship just the high pitched tone,
- If I clinch my jaws the tone will increase in pitch and volume,
- When I take a hike with my dogs, in the woods, we have a heavily wooded lot and many acres of woodlands and forest around our home and this is usually how I wind down occassionally.

These observations seem familiar to anyone?
