Can nasal pallet hang onto strong smells?

Help!  When I smell smoke (fire or cigarette) or other burning type smells, I can smell it for up to a week later.  This has been going on for several years.  I cringe when I have to go past someone smoking because i know I'll be smelling it for a week.  I've tried coffee beans, putting vicks or perfume right under my nose, and nothing lasts or wipes out the smell. This is driving me crazy.  When I'm inside it's more noticable, and I feel like I'm not breathing deep because I feel like it's stale air.   I am not a smoker, nor is anyone in my family.  My printer seems to trigger it also if I haven't used it for several days...it's older and emits a smell on occassion after sitting idle for days. My smell is always good as far as recognizing smells and I can usually smell things sooner than others. Any suggestions?
