Daily Ear wax discharge from right ear after mastoid surgery

Hi,

I am experiencing daily discharge from my right ear which I have been told by my doctor is ear wax. No infection. It is happening almost every night, I wake up in the morning and there is a stain on the pillow, I'm having to wear cotton wool in my ear every night as I know it will leak during the night. Its a yellow/brown colour, and is runny, not lumpy.

I had a mastiodectomy in 2007 which was successful, and revision surgery in February this year. However the frequent discharge has happened mainly since the revision surgery in February.

Does anyone have any advice on treatments in the UK for this? My doctor said I will have to just wait for it to subside, but it has been costant for months and is a dent to my confidence/well being as I dont want my ear to leak every day!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Any tablets/sprays one can recommend?

Thanks,

The doctor said it ios not infected. It must be from having the mastoid surgery. Can you give any more advice on treatment with this in mind?

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi there,
The common cause of ear discharge is ear wax. However discharge may also be caused by a minor irritation or infection. The common causes of ear discharge are eczema, otitis externa, otitis media, mastoiditis or a ruptured or perforated eardrum. An ear examination may be helpful for determining the correct cause of your symptoms. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause. If the doctor suspects it to be an infection he may take a sample of the ear drainage and send it to a lab for examination and recommend anti-inflammatory or antibiotic medicines. Do write to me again.
Best luck and regards!
