Forgotten how to speak normally?

8 weeks ago I caught a cold from my children, usual stuff....sore throat, runny nose.   I lost my voice which is common for when i catch a cold.  8 weeks later i still have very little voice, it's all husky and very sore sometimes.  I saw my doctor at 3 weeks who gave me antibiotics and then when they didn't work he sent me to a ENT specialist today. He examined my throat with the camera thingy and said that nothing was wrong with my vocal cords and that it was simply that I had forgotten how to speak correctly and that i should go and have speech therapy.  He said this was quite a common problem.   Has anyone every heard of this before.  It is rather strange as I'm able to cough and laugh and it sounds normal.

Go to the NPR website and type in "dysphonia" in the search box.  You'll see a story like yours, and the woman was treated with massage.

i haven't been through it, but i have heard about it, it's kind of like being in a wheel chair for a long time and then your muscles have weakened and forgot what to do and you end up stumbling and tripping for a bit.  i have gone horse many times and my grandmother always prescribed a spoon full of honey.  it coats your throat and soothes the pain, but it's also loaded with anti-oxidants.
good luck
