Foul odour coming from my nose

I have been suffering from a very strong odour that comes from my nose when I breathe out for about four months now.  It is making me really depressed as my friends have commented it and some people even move away so not to be near me and I don't blame them.  The smell is a fecal smell and also sometimes a rotten egg smell. It is always there but now and again it will be so bad it can fill a whole room and literally be like a stink bomb has gone off. I also suffer from bad breath (also fecal / rotten egg) but this is not as bad as the odour coming from my nose. I have been to my GP four times and every time they say they cannot smell it and just gave me a nasal spray which did nothing. I have also been to the dentist twice and they say everything is in order. My oral hygyiene is good, I brush, floss, moutwash etc. It is the smell from the nose that bothers me, I don't understand how it can be so overpowering? Also, I suffer from IBS and constipation from time to time. Also, I don't know if this is connected in any way but my mum had awful fecal bad breath for years and last year was diagnosed with bowel and pancreatic cancer and it is still there but after being operated on it's significantly lessened. My aunt also has bowel cancer and my grandmother died three years ago of bowel cancer. I don't know whether this horrendous smell is a digestive problem or nasal problem and it's driving me insane and driving people away from me, just when I am about to start university. The doctors don't listen to me because I am just a nineteen year old so will do no tests no matter how hard I insist so I am desparing :(. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Sinus Infection & the Rotten Egg Smell (The Document)
Sinus infection or sinusitis is one of the most tedious and even depressing health conditions that a person may experience through his or her life. The cold virus is what causes the infection, but the problem is how hard it is to kill this virus as it is hidden behind the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus. In this article I intend to talk about my personal experience at dealing with this infection, hoping to help many others, as I was once helped.
It all started about five years ago when I began to deal with a mucus condition that I seemed to never be able to eradicate. I took some medication but no results or maybe I just didn’t follow through accordingly.  One night, my wife and I were wondering where tat terrible smell in the room was coming from. By then, I did not yet realize that it was me the one carrying the smell, at least not until I noticed that it was following me wherever I went. The only comment worth mentioning about that experience is that for a few nights I had to sleep into the guest room as I didn’t want to punish my wife with that disgusting smell. It was at that point when I decided to take good action plan towards that problem.
A) The first thing I did was to pay a visit to my doctor. She prescribed me some antibiotic. After taking about half of the prescribed pills, I just stopped taking them as I did not see any good improvement; maybe I was just desperate to see some type of results.
B) Then, I went online and browse through different forums about other people dealing with this, and there I read about some natural remedies. The first one I came across with was about Distilled Saline Water for sinus flush. I decided to give it a try so I went to the pharmacy and bought me the Neti Pot kit.  I tried that treatment for a couple of weeks, and, although I did feel a little bit better with the treatment, no cure was accomplished from it.
C) Then I read about the Coconut oil and all its benefits, so I gave that a shot.  My mother in law, who is from Caribbean Islands, made a bottle of that oil to add a drop onto the formula of my new born daughter. So I started taking that oil for my personal problem by taking 1/2 mL of it through nostrils twice a day as others recommended.  I am not sure how much this contributed to the cure of my problem, I also used the great homemade remedy described on the next paragraph, but this I can say with certainty about coconut oil: This particular oil had a burnt taste into it and I thought it was so helpful to counteract the disgusting rotten egg smell while breathing. That, all by itself, was extremely compensating to me, especially because it helped me recover my self-steam while around other people.
D) The next remedy was a blending of some amazing ingredients. I believe this particular remedy to be the most effective of all the ones I took to defeat this virus and get rid of the infection.  But as I used this remedy, I continued to use the coconut oil treatment. Below are the names of the ingredients and where to find them.
1st- Aloe Vera Gel:  I bought the Aloe Vera Leaves at Harris Teeters. See YouTube videos on how to get the gel out of the leaf without wasting any meet. Add the meat of half lead of Aloe Vera to the blender
2nd- Red Perl Onion or Shallots: wash with warm water a quarter pound of this and prop into blender with peels on.
3rd- Garlic: wash with warm water a quarter pound of garlic and prop into blender with peels on.
4th- Apple Cider Vinegar:  Add two cups of this vinegar to blender
5th- Pure Natural Honey:  Add two cups of this honey to blender.
Blend all these ingredients thoroughly and take three tablespoon in the morning before breakfast and three tablespoon at night right before going to bed; reduce to two tablespoon when conditions improve. Then take one tablespoon if no symptoms of infection.  If you decide to stop this remedy for whatever reason, do yourself a favor and keep on taking a whole clove of garlic every day by swallowing with liquid.
E) The last home remedy, which I took parallel with the two previously mentioned remedies, was Ginger Tea. To prepare it, get two ounces of chopped ginger and drop it into boiling water for about 5 minutes, then sweeten with pure natural honey and enjoy.  Like coffee, take a cup of this tea every morning, as it can also be used as a good sense stimulator.

MY PERSONAL THOUGHT ABOUT THE SUBJECT:
Getting cured from Sinusitis is not an easy task; I went through it myself and know all the implications. If you really want to eradicate that hidden cold virus causing the infection, be aware that you may only accomplish this if and only if you are more tenacious than the resilience of the virus.  Just get to it, but do take it seriously and fight bravely nonstop until you are free.
God Bless You All!

Hi All,

One thing that helps me to keep my bed breath in check is an ORAL PROBIOTIC called BLIS K12.

It was actually invented to boost an immune response of the upper respiratory system. As a positive side effect it was found that this K12 strain of probiotic inhibits the bad breath causing bacteria.

When I used it, I experienced a detox reaction where I could sense a tingling sensation in my ears, experienced a lot of sneezing and came down with flu like symptoms (sinus pain). The beauty is that I started to discharge green, yellow phlegm which I did not realize was even there (I have been irrigating my sinuses for years before this occurrence so it shows how entrenched that stuff was in my sinuses, Eustachian tubes). I even blew out a solid chunk of yellow stuff.

I was relieved and glad that I found something that worked but....having experimented with  a number of various solutions I hoped it would last. Well, initially my sense of smell had improved significantly I could not believe the vividness of my shampoo's fragrance :)

K12 probiotic also prevents formation of those nasty tonsil stones.
So where can you get the K12 probiotic?

There are several products that contain it. I personally recommend SWANSON's oral probiotic K12. Not only it is extremely cheap - $6 for a bottle of 30 lozenges. Each lozenge contains 3billion CFU of K12 which is 6 times more than other "leading" products which are ironically much more expensive.

Here is the link:

A few other remedies that you could experiment with:
• Colloidal Silver
• Olive Leaf Extract – make sure it has at least 17% of oleuropein
• Grapefruit Seed Extract

Hi All,

I have literally read the comments of each one of you above. As I have suffered with these foul smells either through nose ( which only I could smell) and foul stinky mouth odour - which used to be worse after waking up in the morning and after having any dairy products really.

To my luck I found the correct remedy to my problem and it helps me alot. Through it I have gained my life and self confidence back and I am able to hang around with friends and work mates again.

The product I found is an awarded remedy for bad breath and it works 100% ...please if any of u really are struggling I woul suggest atleast give this one try and see if it works for u..and if it does then just like myself you will be back to ur normal life. You've spent thousands on doctors and other tests. Now do yourself a favour...and get this product to give it a try. I hope it helps. They have nasal flushes, sprays, medications etc that actually work on bad breath real quick. But then the only thing is that these do need to be used on daily basis and escpecially right before u are going out for social get togethers etc. They aren't real cheap either but I guess where all of you have spent so much money on doctors and tests etc then why not give this a shot.  Link to the product site is :

Good luck and I hope it helps.

Had a foul smell in nose. 3 x anti-biotics and appointment to see ENT specialist when I was told of the remedy by elderly nursing sister. Chop up two slices of onion and place next to the bed at night so that you breath the fumes. Three nights of this sorted out the problem that I had for around six months!

You are correct, in that the Sinus Flush does not work for everybody with sinus odor.  It does work very well for some people with sinus odor, especially the ones where only they can smell it.  It does not seem to work for many of the people who have it so bad that other people can smell it, but sometimes it does.  I will duly note that when I update my journal next week.

Some people, but not all, have discovered that their foul odor is due to problems that originate in their digestive track, liver, or kidneys.  There seems also to be something else, a total mystery, that can cause it.

Thank you for your help, it's been a great help. I used a Q-tip like you said and THREE came out. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the one in my right tonsil out without causing it to bleed :/. I will buy a waterpik and see how it goes.

Is the sit-up sit-down flush the reverse sit-up you referred to in the comments?
I will give this a go

Yes, tonsilliths are nasty smelling, they seem to have the same poop odor as the one that comes from the nose, and maybe the tonsilliths are causing the nasal odor.  I am guessing, just guessing, that the stones and nasal smells are the result of the same anaerobic bacteria, living in the folds of the tonsils and nasal cavities.  At any rate, the best way to get rid of the stones appears to be a WaterPik, and some people have luck with a Q-tip dipped in Listerine.

Also, perhaps try a sit-up, sit-down flush like I recommended to "nstand" on the comments section of my journal.  When I tested it, an infected glob came out, even though I wasn't having any symptoms of anything.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Yesterday I was looking into my mouth and saw these white things sticking out of my tonsils and after prodding them these balls popped out, and I mean really stinky white balls. I googled them and it says they are tonsil stones and can cause bad breath which makes sense as I have this bad taste in my mouth probably caused by them. I wonder if this could cause a bad smell coming from my nose?

I've a really bad smell in my nose for over 2 years and obviously it is a real stopper to making friends and even keeping current ones because you feel reluctant to go out with them. It's frustrating and seemingly unfair when everyone else has got gf's and are going out, it pushes u to segregation and solitude. I was given antihistamin's and antibiotics from my gp which did not work at all. Then I saw an E.N.T specialist ,finally after the long *** waiting list, whom concluded that I had a deviated septum, (nose cartilage), which allowed more air in so I secreated more flem, more air flowing in meant drier nasal wall which meant bleeding, so the option is to have septoplasty, which is surgery to correct the septum, therefore stopping the symptoms and allowing me to live like a real 18 year old. Don't feel sorry for yourself because of the mutilations of kids in northern Uganda, is so much worse, get a wider perspective and realise you're much better off than some others. I love reading harry potter!!

I went back to your original post and saw the family history, and yes, the smell could be related to the bowel thing.  I don't know much about it, but I'd recommend The UltraMind Solution by Dr. Mark Hyman, which would explain how it is possible, with some hope of treatment.

There are other causes for bad smells, and you have at least eliminated one of them.  Another cause, among many, could be atrophic rhinitis.  I thing the Mayo Clinic would have more information on this.

I'm glad you got it sorted....however my dentist says everything is fine regarding my oral hygiene so I'm mystified as to what is causing the smell.

Hi friggy,

I tried the flip turn sinus flush twice every day for two weeks and the bad smell from my nose is still here, as foul as ever. My breath is also quite bad so the smell is definitely coming from my nose and throat as my dentist says there is nothing wrong. I don't have any phlegm either so it's probably not an infection?

Recently I've had difficulty breathing, though this is probably from my nose smell that is taking over my life. I inspected my tonsils the other day, and my right tonsil is very swollen and twice the size of my left one...it also appears to be extremely ulcerated, not sure whether to get this checked out or not.

have had the same bad smell\taste in the mouth for over 6 months now.  Couldn't figure out what the hell the problem was.  Mine became so awful that the smell would literally funk up my entire office at work.  I too was convinced that the smell was coming from my nose.  Because of this, i ended up at an ENT, who convinced me I needed surgery on my sinuses & tonsils.  Well, after having tonsils\adenoids removed, upper gi, lower colon splenoid or something done, and all kinds of other medical test ran.  The culprit turned out to be a crown on the lower left molar tooth.  The tooth up under the crown had split in half, and the damn thing became infected or something.  When the smell first started, the first place I went was to the dentist (of course they didn't see anything wrong).  I ended up on a wild goose chase that cost me thousands of dollars.  Finally after reading another site and listening to the guy on there story, I went back to the dentist and lied that the tooth was bothering me.  That's when the dentist decided to take the crown off (he couldn't tell anything from the X-ray; the crown was n the way of seeing my actual tooth).  He ended up having to pull the split tooth.  He told me to come back for a bridge of something once it has healed but "No Thanks!" I'll leave the spot empty because empty doesn't become infected and stink up a whole room......

Thank you for your reply friggy. I will look into this.

I have noticed that the smell from my nose is worse after I eat dairy products.

Your affliction is not uncommon on this forum.  The fecal smell is usually caused by anaerobic bacteria thriving in your sinuses.  It can happen with no other signs of sinus infection--congestion or infected mucus.

It may possibly be flushed out by a Neilmed Sinus Flush, but that only works in your lower sinuses because of gravity.  Anaerobic bacteria grow where there's little or no air, which means your upper sinuses.  The only way to wash it out is to use hypertonic saline, and the only method that will work is the Flip Turn Sinus Flush, which defeats gravity by bending over.  Nose stink is mentioned in this journal.

http://www.medhelp.org/user_journals/show/2322

I always note that this is risky, because you have to bend over, preferably in a shower, but you can also do it outside on soft ground.  Plus you are young and not prone to dizziness.

If you do it, continue doing it for at least 3 days after the smell goes away, otherwise the bacteria grow back.  I know, I got rid of this smell 3 times before I figured it out.

Don't get vexed at the doctors, the sinus is still a medical frontier.  Oh, and start eating some probiotic yogurt for your intestines, as such problems can cause other problems in other parts of the body.  I suggest a book called Ultra Mind Solution by Mark Hyman M.D.
