God awful smell

I have an unusual problem.  I smoke, and occassionally I get this god awful smell in my nose.  At first I thought it was a smell coming from the cigarettes I was smoking or the ashtray.  But, my wife never can smell it.  It is obviously coming from my nasal passage or something. I cannot explain the twangy almost rubber ashtray burn smell that is constantly for days in my nose and suddenly disappears again for months then reappears.  Is there anyone out there who can give me some insight into what is going on.  It drives me crazy all day smelling this and its really hard to go to sleep at night with it.

Sounds like something I am going through.  I quit smoking about six months ago and it seems like ever since then I have this terrible taste/smell in the back of my throat/nose.  It comes and goes.  I brush my teeth and floss all the time now and it doesn't go away.  I went to the dentist and of course the smell/taste wasn't there cause like I said it comes and goes and the dentist said I have nothing wrong with my oral hygiene but that I have big tonsils and to see an ENT doctor.  She also said I don't have bad breath but I think it's because I wasn't having the problem that day.  I don't know if other people can smell it on me, I don't know how they couldn't but I am the only one that tastes/smells it.  It's similar to smelling/tasting an ashtray.  I never even smoked cigarettes before I was always a pot fan but even now I don't smoke anything so it's weird.  I have an appt. next week and can't wait to find out what's happening.  I have allergies too but take medication everyday.  Hmm
