Had a sore throat, it's gone but now I'm coughing up phlegm.

About a week ago I woke up with a sore throat and ear ache. I gargled with salt water and took pain killers for a couple days until it all went away. Now I have developed a cough which always seems to produce phlegm and in the morning, when I wake up, my chest feels kind of heavy and it's harder to breathe but after a hard cough some phlegm comes up and it's fine for the rest of the day. It's also worth noting that the sore throat returns briefly in the mornings but a glass of water cures it.

P.S. I have no medical insurance so a doctor visit I want to avoid.
