Has hearing been permanently damaged?

Over the weekend I used a lot of power tools.  I did not realize the impact that this would have on my ears.  I was using this in my apartment in a small den that I have (i.e. acoustical environment).  I used the tools off and on for abut 2.5 days.  On the third day, I used a routher for about 5 or 6 hours.  When the ringing started I went and bought some ear plugs and head phones and wore them from the rest of the day.  I've noticed some ringing in my ears, but it has started to subside.  My ears are actually very sensetive to sound right now (I've had a recent cough and sinus infection) and hurt a little.

Could I have sufferred permanent hearing loss?  Or, would that be from a more long term usage?  I didn't realize the sound that this would have.

You probably DID lose some hearing cells from using power tools without earplugs. We are always losing hearing cells from loud noises in our modern environment. Whether you will notice any actual hearing loss or continued ringing, only time will tell.

The moral of this story is, ALWAYS use hearing protection when using power tools or in any very noisy environment!

The amount of hearing loss depends on the loudness of the noise AND the length of exposure.
