Have to pop ears a few times a day

Usually I have to pop my ears a few times each day.  Also, I don't feel I can hear as well as I possibly could.  I have tried not popping them, but if I don't pop them, they will start hurting, feeling as if there's pressure inside my ears.  In 2002 I took a flight and while we were descending my ears popped weirdly or something (I can't exactly remember), but after that point I've just had to randomly pop my ears throughout the day...at first it was annoying but it has become second nature.  I know I should have gone to a doctor about this by now but I just haven't.  Any ideas on what it might be?  Like air trapped in there or something? Thanks.
