How long does a "temporary" tracheostomy take?

My husband had an emergency tracheo[s]tomy a month ago (excess bleeding during a supposedly routine surgery, which caused breathing problems), and no one can tell us how long recovery might take. Today our ENT doctor scared us by saying that there was no guarantee that the tube would ever come out, although he did say that in two weeks he will put in a smaller tube. My husband is super-depressed, and so am I.
Does anyone have any knowledge about possible recovery times? Is there maybe no hope at all, and is the surgeon just trying to prepare us? Thanks!
