Husband has hearing loss in one ear

Over the last month or so my husband has noticed a loss of hearing in one ear but when he pulls it down and kind of presses on the side he can hear better. He feels like it's plugged and sounds are muffled or he's not hearing it at all. Today I tried calling the home phone several times and he didn't pick up. He had been giving my son a bath but the phone is close by and he should have heard it. We've also noticed lately that he's not hearing his alarm go off. I've had to nudge him a few times before he shuts it off.
He said tonight that he guesses he should go in and get it checked because he's starting to get a little worried but he's not going to be able to make an appointment for awhile with how busy he's been at work.
He has no pain, just a loss of hearing in one ear for some reason. Any ideas what this could be?
