Is My Doctor Right About My Son's Swollen Gland?

by Paggzo, Jun 21, 2008 08:52PM
I had my 7 year old at the doctor this morning.  I noticed a pea-sized/shaped lump behind his left ear.  She said it was an inflamed lymph node.  It was reacting to a mosquito bite he had on the back of his head near his hair line.  I saw the node first before I even saw the bug bite.  She said not to worry about it at it did not need treatment.  She said the gland could remain swollen for up to 3 months.  Did anyone out there ever have this happen to their child?

My 6 year old has a lump on the back of his neck (actually there are 2) they said the same thing (not due to a bite but due to illness) well it ahs been 5 years and they are still there.
I would do one of two things, first just keep an eye on it to see if it does go away or get bigger, or
2 if it really scares you then make an appt. with an ENT.
LUMPS scare me
I  keep an eye on Gary's and every time he goes into the doctors, which isn't often, I have them take a note as to the size of it. they can't figure out why it is still there they feel it is due to him having MONO when he was 1
good luck

I had my son at the doctor again today.  He threw up a few times last night.  His throat was red so I thought he might have strep but it was negative.  He has a mild stomache virus.  I showed the doctor the lymph node (his regular doctor this time).  He concurred that it was due to the bug bite.  He saw another lymph node on his neck near one more bug bite.  He wasn't worried about them because they were not enlarged and they were movable and near sites of infection or irritation.  I still worry though.  I'm like you, I hate lumps.  Even thought I've had two opinions I'm still a nervous wreck.  My doctor said the lymph nodes could be there for a while.  Great!  Thanks for your advice.
