Laryngeal spasm after Thyroid Surgery

Laryngeal spasm after Thyroid Surgery

Hi everyone,I am looking for help and support from anyone who suffers from Laryngeal spasms.
I had my thyroid gland removed a few years ago and the surgeon damaged my vocal cord(left side)this meant I could only whisper,so they suggested injecting my vocal cord with a teflon filler to fatten it up.This did make my voice stronger but I now suffer from laryngeal spasms. The doctors wont admit its caused by the surgery even though I was fine before.I am not looking at blaming anyone I just want to stop them.My GP showed me a letter he received from the hospital saying they dont know how to stop them.At the moment I am taking medication for reflux in case its acid causing the problem. The spasms tend to happen when I have a sore throat or a cough. The other day I was washing up and it felt like someone had stabbed me in the throat with darning needle and then I had a spasm. They are so scary to have your airway clamps shut and you cant get any air down your throat, this sets off the symptoms of a panic attack(thumping heart, sweating, pins and needles from the top of your head down every inch of your body)I was told to phone an ambulance when they happen but if I am on my own I cant speak so I cant tell them where to come.I have to stay calm (so hard to do) and hope it will pass. Can anyone help please.?

Hello jellybug,
I had a terrifying spasm and called 911 anyway, they knew where I was by the screen at the 911 switchboard. Even tho I was breathing roughly by the time they arrived, I was taken anyway. It was heaven to sit with a mask giving me Ventylin and oxygen, and I was given sub-lingual Ativan so in 15 min I was mellow and relieved! The spasm was set off coughing on a cookie crumb, the tiniest speck can set it off. My spasms began via Post Traumatic Stress the result of severe abuse from many sources and over many years. It is terror, I never know when it will attack, even in  deep sleep once, making the spasm a fresh trauma to add to the pile!
