Lump in back of neck

I am an 18 year old female that goes to college and have recently found a raised bump on the back of my neck. It is located a little bit from the spine and below the hairline on the right side. When I apply pressure to it it moves around and makes a bit of a popping noise, it kind of hurts. My neck feels sore lately, and when I lean my head forward and to the left it feels like I am giving my neck a stretch/strain in the particular area. I was just curious could this be a knot? Or something more serious?
