What most people know of as their "tonsils" are actually called the palatine tonsils and are located just behind the tongue on either side of the throat. Then there are the lingual tonsils, which you cannot see, and are located at the base of the tongue. Finally there are the adenoids (adenoids), which are the same tissue as the others (only have a different name), and are located at the very top of the throat behind the nasal passages.
The lingual tonsils are infrequently removed; the others are commonly removed.
