Pseudomonas ear infection

My 15 year old son has been treated with antibotics for a month now, for an ear infection.  first amox. then bactrium, and final a culture was done on the drainage.  He has pseudomonas in his ear and was getting the wrong treatment.  He is now on cipro orally and tobramycin ear drops.  Has anyone ever had this before and will the treatment work, will it go away or not and how long before the antibotics kicks in.  His ear is really hurting him

Folks, I have been treating pseudomonas ears for several years now and Cipro alone doesn't work - you will also need 3 injections of Rocephin - 3 days in a row, as this is the drug of choice for pseudomonas.  As for not getting your ear wet - you can make a mixture of white vinegar and rubbing alcohol - equal parts and put 3-4 drops  your ear(s) after getting water in the ears and this will kill the bacteria.  I hope this helps.

Wow!  I am just dealing with this for the first time at age almost 40.  My ear started with just swelling.  The next day, it was swollen shut.  Didn’t start to hurt until that 2nd day with little sharp pains.  It worse when I ate supper and continued to hurt after.  I am on day 5 and it is getting better.  ENT had to put a wick in my ear just to get drops down to my eardrum.  I’m a drummer for my church and am praying this completely goes away very soon!

I'm 56 years old and had pseudomonas from birth. This is a horrible infection and it ate away all the tiny bones in both ears. I don't believe there is anything more painful! I had blood oozing from my ears as a child along with puss. I would bang my head on the wall trying to deviate the pain. My whole life has been filled with ear surgeries. First surgery was a mastoidectomy then scraping away the diseased bones from cholesteotomas which also formed. The doctor said it would have spread to my brain and kill me had I not had the surgeries. After those surgies I had repeated surgeries to try and improve my hearing throughout my life. Currently I have a BoneBridge implant in one ear which is a conductive hearing loss device similar to a cochlear implant. All is ok except my damn doctor decided to completely fill in my ear cavity with tissue taken from my andomin. He said it would prevent further infections.  Now I have no hearing in that ear unless I wear the magnetic attachment and no ear hole. He never told me he was filling the ear completely so now I'm suing him... The other ear which was also infected has an artifical stapes but it doesn't work that well. I still wear an aid to try to hear. Thank goodness I live in Canada where we have health care coverage. Sorry for those who pay out of pocket.

Hi Guys,

I've had Pseudomonas in my ears since I was a little child - Now 21.

The only way to treat this is to keep the ear as dry as possible, wear ear plugs in pools/don't get your head wet and eat healthy!

Ciproxin HC Ear drops work, although the peroxide and vinegar work just as well if not better. Don't be scared and don't be alarmed by the feeling, it's odd and it works.

I have horrible hearing due to Pseudomonas so just take all the right steps to help yourself because that's all you can do to treat it.

I am dealing with right now as well.  I have had it twice in the past.  The first time I suffered with it for 6 weeks before they finally cultured it, the second time it took several weeks to clear it up.  The last time I had it was 17 years ago.  Yesterday my left ear starting hurting and when I woke up today my jaw is very sore and achey.... so I knew what was going on! Went to the Dr and got antibiotics and ear drops.  I am hoping it clears up quickly this time.  This is such a painful infection!

Hi my fellow pseudo ears.. I have had continuos ear infections for 1 year now, every month it  flares up. My Dr finally did a swab and it came back + for pseudomonas and Staphylococcus aureus, hurrah finally im on the right antibiotics and hopefully it will destroy all these nasty bugs. Ear infections would have to  be one of the most painful things i have ever experienced i have no idea how small children cope with the pain. Good luck to you all with the treatments im looking forward to a positive result!!

When I was younger I got pseudomonas so bad that I was hospitalized. I went to see a Dr. at UC Davis when I lived in California and they were amazing. They treated me with some stuff (I don't really remeber it was about 12 years ago). I recommened if you live in California check out UC Davis they are excellent or just check out UC Davis in general. Good luck with that

My dad is currently sufferng with the same thing...nearly six months of mis-diagnosis and wrong antibiotics....costing him an arm and a leg.  I called the clinic and had a fit knowing that my Dad was not recieving the proper treatment.  See the doctor many times with the same complaints...he was given an antibiotic that wasn't working, saw the doctor and he put him on the same round of treatment...it didn't work again.  Drained it...it didn't work.  When I called I asked why they hadn't done cultures...I'm not a medical professional, but do know that there are ways to diagnos infections.  When speaking with the nurse, she told me to tell my Dad to mention to the doctor that he wanted cultures...it's not my dads responsibility to tell the doctor how to do his job!!  I think that my Dad now has osteomyletitis as a result of too many misdiagnosis and frankly poor treatment.  It is a very difficult infection to treat and can take several rounds of treatment...so I urge all of you to be patient, however, if you feel chronic headaches, jaw pain or anything similar...don't hesitate to call your doctor or get a second opinion.  Anyone that is immune compromised, diabetic or in general poor health, should take this very seriously.  Cipro and drops are an appropriate treatment regime, but can come back again, keep your ear dry and if your a woman, keep cotton etc, in your ear when using hair-spray etc.  Good luck to all of you.  Take your medical care by the horns...it's okay to do research, ask questions of your doctor and know what his treatment plan is.  It's your patient bill of rights.  Side note, my husband is a family practice physician.  A few years ago,  my daughter had what I thought was "pink eye"...he disregarded my opinion and even after many feelings of something wasn't right, he still told me it was pink eye and she wouldn't be treated anyway.  Doesn't matter your education...of which I have none, he was wrong.  it was pink eye and left untreated in her case, it turned to cellulitits.  for a 6 year old...that's scary stuff.  So, they don't know it all.

I had pseudomonas infection in my ears & went thru all the recommended antibiotic treatments w no results. My lab manager & I did our research & found that pseudomonas can't live in a highly acidic environment.
We mixed a 50/50 solution of hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar - then syringed it into my ear.
It stung like hell, but within 3 treatments, we cleared it up...

Good luck!

I hope his ear is better! I am 26 and have the same infection. I have had it for a month and half or two now. I started out with amox, then something else, and finally cipro. I have also had three rounds of ear drops, even had to have a wick put in my ear just to get the drops to the ear. This has been the most painfull ear infection I have ever had! I had to be given pain meds, too just so I could sleep. I fianlly went to a specialist who told me my ears looked pretty good, but gave me one more round of drops just to make sure. It is now a week since I finished them and my pain is starting to come back already. I have read up on it a little bit, and typically it is not this difficult to get rid of. The reiment they gave you should have worked. I am just one of the lucky ones who have to deal with it longer!
