Scopolamine side effects/withdrawal

Scopolamine side effects/withdrawal

Anyone know how long the blurry vision lasts when one stops taking scopolamine?  My last patch (which I still have on at an MD friend's recommendation) was at 72 hours last Friday evening, which was 2.5 days ago.

Brief history: Diagnosed with vertigo in June (dizziness, nausea, vomiting, disequilibrium, but no spinning sensation), put on scopolamine patches.  First few patches I removed after 72 hours and waited to see if I still had “vertigo.”  Each time symptoms returned within 12-24 hours – with a vengeance!  Then I learned about scopolamine withdrawal, with symptoms identical to vertigo.  Couldn’t convince my doctors, though – they all just kept telling me to refill my prescriptions and continue using the patches.

Fast forward to 8/26/11, a Friday.  I’d previously ordered a refill on my prescription and expected to pick it up after work.  Meanwhile, I had on my last patch, which would hit 72 hours at 10:00 PM.  Just my luck, it came off in the shower.  Since it was my last patch, I fished it out of the hair catcher afterwards, rinsed it off, and put it back on.  I wondered whether having been exposed to shampoo, conditioner, and bodywash would have any effect on it, and well, yes, it did.  I had a chiropractic appointment (for an unrelated issue) at noon, and by the time I got there, I was already experiencing the beginning of scopolamine withdrawal symptoms.

Thank God I mentioned the vertigo to my chiropractor!  He’s brilliant!  He put me back on the table and adjusted my atlas, then had one of his employees laser my ears while I moved my head according to her instructions.  Afterwards I felt much better and was actually able to return to work and complete my shift!  I started to feel just a wee bit sick right at quitting time (5:00 PM) so I took two meclizine and drove home with no problems.  I did not stop at the pharmacy because I still hadn’t received notification that my scopolamine refill was ready.   I vomited as soon as I got home, then went straight to bed.  Woke up at 11:00 PM, took more meclizine, and went back to bed.  Got up at 5:00 AM and went to work!

Y’all, I worked a full 10-hour shift on Saturday!  No meds – not even meclizine!  I ate and didn’t throw up.  I haven’t been dizzy.  I was able to work and drive!  I still have this annoying “buzzed” feeling in my head that probably some drug addict would love to have, but I can deal with that.  Every time previously that I held off this long on replacing a scop patch I was either puking my guts out or laying in bed hanging on for dear life.  My chiropractor is my hero!  And when the pharmacy calls to say my prescription is refilled, I’ll be saying “No, thanks.”  I’m going to be scopolamine-free!

And for those of you that have the kind of vertigo caused by crystals, my chiropractor says that he has this cool helmet thingy that you put on and it guides you through the Epley maneuver so that every movement is exactly right.  My chiropractor’s website is http://www.drvan.com/.

It is now Monday 8/29/11.  I am no longer dizzy or nauseous, but I STILL have this annoying buzzed feeling and very, very blurry vision.  I can sort of focus my eyes when I have to, but it takes effort.  Anyone else know how long it takes these side effects to peter out?
