Something fell out

today during class i yawned than suddenly something dropped out of the back of my throat and it felt like I had swolled a ball. My lympth notes swelled up almost immediately after and when I went to look in the mirror it appeared that part of my tonsil was missing. Now a year ago I did have a case tonsilitis and I think that may have something to do with it but I'm really not sure what is wrong. Any information would be STRONGLY appreciated. Thanks bunches.

I'm so grateful to have found this posting site.

I started to have problems with my throat about 5 years ago.The first thing that happened was I went to A&E thinking I had something stuck at the back of my throat as there was a sensation that felt like this. They sent me away saying nothing was there.
The sensation continued intermittently and gradually got worse. My ability to swallow properly was impaired and it seemed that there was a lot of mucous coming down the back of my right nostril and to my throat. I discovered that I has post nasal drip...something my doctor had never heard of! It felt like the deposit of mucous at the back of my throat had distorted something and instead of food going down the throat some of it seemed to get stuck in the mucous and travel back upwards into the nasal cavity. I could eat something and then when I coughed a while later particles of what I had eaten came out.  Pretty repulsive. This became more and more regular an occurence. I spent a lot of time flushing my nose with salted water in a neti pot. It helped slightly. I then went back to the doctor and ended up seeing an ENT consultant and having a CAT scan...nothing wrong! I guess they were looking for cancer and I didn't have that. The consultant told me that it was to do with the climate I live in ( Scotland) and there was nothing that could be done.
I suffered in silence and just got on with it as best I could..still flushing out the build up of mucous every day with endless coughing and water flushing.I felt embarassed in social settings and it would feel really uncomfortable if I couldn't cough the mucous out all the time.

Then more recently on top of the constant coughing my mouth began to taste horrible ,as described by others here and I began to cough out these smelly small things that I assumed were food that had got trapped up in my nose and were now decaying. I tried just eating pureed food for a while but gave up..it was grim!

I have had a lot of difficult emotions with this...feeling helpless, depressed, avoiding social events etc. I began a more thorough investigation and I came and found this discussion board and have now got some sort of relief and feel less helpless around it.

I have bought a water pick for flossing teeth. I fill the reservoir with warm water and salt and do 2 things. Firstly I direct the spray, on the lowest setting , down my nose.... the flow comes out of the back of the throat and into the moth. This seems to soften and loosen things and the mucous can then be easily sneezed out. Next I direct the spray up inside my mouth at the back of my throat to where I know these deposits are sitting. I start with the lowest setting and then go to the next, but never to any strong setting. It is a bit uncomfortable but it does dislodge the tonsil stones.

I was tested for usual allergies at the time of the CT scan and I wasn't allergic to the usual things...dust mites, cats, etc.  I stopped all dairy produce for a while...nothing changed . I also had a period of avoiding wheat...no change there either.  So I don't think it is an allergic reaction to food.  I've read recently that a person with tonsil stones should not take dairy as this produces more mucous. In the past I've taken several homeopathic remedies and also had kinesiology to try to get to the root of it..Still not got there! I don't drink or smoke..they say this can affect the health of your mouth.  At least now that really bad breath can be removed and that feels better.

Thanks to all who posted here...it really helped and I hope that what I have written will help someone too.

You might have developed a tonsillith which is a piece of food particles that gets stuck in the tonsil.  After repeated infections over one's lifetime, the tonsil develops little grooves in which food can get stuck.  You might require a tonsillectomy to resolve the problem.
