Sore Throat Help

Hey everyone,
Just recently I started getting a real bad sore throat, to the point where its really difficult to eat or swallow. I went to the doctor and he ran tests for Strep and Mono and they were both negative, so he sent me home and just told me to go to the pharmacy and get some cough drops and aspirin.
The sore throat went away after about 2 weeks, but just my luck, its come back about a month later. Its just as bad, and I can barely eat. When I have this sore throat, i get really bad headaches, and im dizzy whenever I stand up. I can feel the glands in my neck are swollen as well.
Im worried that this is something serious and that my doctor just isnt taking the necessary precautions, so if anyone on here has any suggestions as to what it might be, itd be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and theres no white spots on my tonsils, but they are red and really swollen.
