Sore throat/ white patches near uvula-Please help!

by Faith0710, Apr 01, 2007 12:00AM
For a week I had bad acid reflux and thought my scratchy throat was due to this. I used to have sore throats constantly and a few weeks ago had patches on my tonsils which went away with anitbiotics. Well my husband has had a sore throat for 2 weeks now. Today my throat became very sore, I looked at it.. It is very red, with a blister on my uvula i have about 6 or 7 small white dots around my tonsils and in my throat and a few red spots. I am a very paranoid person. I have never had white spots around my tonsils, always on them. Now I have none on my tonsils but near them. Does this sound like strep or something else. I have been sick on and off for a couple months. I am very scared and have cried numerous times. Please help!

White patches and severe soreness could be a sign of strep throat.  It also can be a side effect of mononeucleosis caused by the epstein barr virus.  Both of which are quite contagious, but are not life threatening if treated.  Strep throat is usually cured in about 5-7 days with an antibiotic such as penicillin or zithromax.  If left untreated it can lead to scarlet fever, which is not desireable. Mono, on the other hand, is a virus which it's effects can last for months, but usually the sore throat part lasts only  about a week.  Mono is typically accompanied by sever fatigue and loss of appetite, and requires lots of rest.  I would have a throat culture ASAP, and probably some blood work if you feel severly fatigued as well.  Hope this helps, good luck.

Thank you, I read the very same thing last night in one of my mothers health books. She gave me some antibiotics she had from about a month ago. She was supposed to take them all but never does, there were 9 left. I took 2 last night and 4 today. After I ate I noticed 4 of the spots were gone. There were no signs that they were ever there just red dots on my throat, so im assuming it was puss. My fears that it was something worse have subsided. Im just hoping the antibiotics I have will help and it will go away. I cannot afford to go to the doctor again as I have no insurance...I will have to wait it out. It is very tiring getting sick 4 times in 2 months, I am just emotionally worn out. Thanks for your help!

Be careful of taking only a few antibiotics rather than the whole bottle as directed.  Taking it as it is directed reduces the chance that you will develop bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics.  You also can develop candidiasis which is a fungal infection that resists your immune system.

Good luck and take your medication as directed not just partially or it may end up causing you more problems that the one it solved.
