Swelling in the throat and mouth with severe fatigue

My boyfriend is 18 years old and a little over a week ago developed a severe sore throat.  This has since turned into great difficulty swallowing, swelling in the neck, mouth and tongue (and around his lower wisdom teeth).  He also has severe fatigue and for the last 4-5 days has slept up to 20 hours each day.  He's been ruled out of having mono and strep throat.  He's been under a doctor's care, but she's been very relaxed about the situation and he's not getting better.  I'm very worried and I would like a second opinion on what it could be.  Thank you.

OtoHNS_MD is right, 20 hours is incredibly lots of sleep, very unusual, even if he's been ruled out for mono and strep, what's the doc telling him?  how can he be so relaxed with being so fatigued.  i agree, if worse, go back and see the doc.

Is he taking any medications from the doctor?
A bacterial throat infection or mono could both cause these symptoms.
Call the doctor and let them know he's not better (is he getting worse?).
