Swollen Lymph nodes

Hello All!

My boyfriend of two years has been having some problems lately, and we're both extremely worried about them. It would be great if someone could offer some insight. For the past year, he has been noticing that his lymph nodes in his neck and throat are extremely swollen, and very firm to the touch. He got them checked out when he first noticed them (one year ago), they took some of the tissue and said it wasn't cancer. We were extremely relieved. They also said they would go away.

They haven't, and in fact they've multiplied. He is under a lot of stress, so I am trying to convince myself it is just that. We're both healthy 20-somethings. He's had a history of stress related disorders (I think he said his throat started bleeding at one point due to stress...), but he's convinced it is something else entirely (namely, cancer. His father recently recovered from cancer and so I think that just really scared him). I made him book another appointment with the doctor, and he is just getting more worried every passing day. We're going to the physician monday in order to get a referral to a specialist (we hope), but last time they weren't much help. "It's not cancer, good luck!" and sent us on our way.

He has dental problems and gets gum infections from time to time. He hasn't seen a dentist for about 8 months and does not brush regularly. Could a gum infection cause the lymph nodes to swell? Or a tooth infection?

Anyone been in a similar situation? Any words of wisdom would be greaty appreciated. Thank you so much.

Yes, if you have an infection in your mouth, and you don't get it taken care of, the swollen lymph nodes will remain. It's mostly in the head and neck area where they'd swell. It's regional.

Okay, we went to the doctor yesterday, who said he thinks it is just stress but they are going to do a number of tests, X-rays, taking a sample of the tissue etc. Those will all be next week, so it will be a while before the results!

They said it wasn't cancer and they said their best guess was that it was dental related. They sent him to the dentist to have some minor procedures, and the swelling went down *very little*, but never away, even when he was keeping up with the brushing and stuff.

I am experiencing that. I am 29 and mine have been hard for a few years. What did they say the first time he went to the Dr?
