Throat Bacterial Growth?

Hi, I've recently had a strange problem occur: every now and then I'll cough up a hunk of material that attached itself to my throat, and I can feel them as I swallow liquids. They eventually reach a size of around 1/8 of an inch in diameter, begin to irratate my throat, loosen, and I'll cough them up. They smell aweful so I can only assume they're associated with bacteria. Recently one occured close enough to my mouth that I was able to feel around the area it was located after it fell off. There were three sores where it apparently attached itself. They keep occuring and I have no idea what they are, so I'd appreciate it if someone knew what this was and if I should be concerned. Thanks for your time.
