Tinnitus, liquid and herpes infection

I recently came down with a genital herpes infection type 1.  As a result I accumulate a large amount of liquid in my middle ear that is not going away.  As well, my tinnitus that was relatively minor has become unbearable.  I can hardly sleep at night, and that is with a fan and noise machine.

How long does liquid remain in the ear after a viral infection?
Will the tinnitus subside if the liquid goes away?
How does a viral infection cause both of these conditions?
How can I treat the liquid if it fails to resolve?

Yes I've been taking generic Valtrex but the pharmacy has changed from a plain white pill that obviously had no outer coating to a new brand that has an outer coating and looks more legit.  I am still plagued with many symptoms from this exposure, including the liquid in my middle ear and tinnitus.  The infection spread from my genitals into my spine and into my head.  It was horrible.

How do I get the liquid cultured?  Would they have to cut my ear drum or can they go through my nose?

Totally agree with you; any virus, including herpes virus can affect your middler and/or inner ear.

Are you taking an anti-viral for the herpes?  i.e. Valtrex?

Has any of this "liquid" been cultured from your ear?

Thanks OHNS, but unfortunately I have read on several medical websites that fluid accumulation in the middle can be caused by viral infection so anti-biotics are contra-indicated.  I am still suffering from this first viral infection so I have "cause and effect".

Hi,

There appears no relation between the genital Herpes and the fluid inside your drum, the latter might be just a coincidence. I would advice you to go to an ENT specialist and get yourself evaluated thoroughly, also you will require an audiometry as well as tympanometry to assess the hearing and the pressure inside the middle ear.
