Tonsillectomy pain medication question!!

by Juliagulia87, Oct 01, 2009 04:25AM
Hey everyone,

I just saw an ENT today and will be having my tonsils removed within the next month. My concern is controlling the pin after the surgery. I have taken morphine 3 times per day and Vicodin ES 4 times per day for chronic, severe abdominal pain for a year now. My worry is that my pain med tolerance is so high that the medication they give me for my throat will not work. Anyone have any ideas of what medication to ask the doctor for? Preferable liquid? Thank you!!

Most ENT docs are comfortable prescribing liquid Vicodin, Percocet or Oxycodone (plain).  I agree with your concerns that you may likely not get very good pain relief.  If I were your doc, I would likely ask for a pain specialist to assist with your recovery period, as the medications (and doses) you may need would be out of my comfort zone.
