Tonsils, nasal congestion

I have a 14 year old son that has mild asthma as well severe allergies that cause major blockage in his nose (he cannot breath through nose at all) We are doing saline rinses instead of a steroid spray only because he is on puffers now with steroids. His tonsils are also huge but our doctor does nothing and says they are ok, does anyone know if this is causing more damage having his tonsils?
I just figure if he can't breath through his nose and his throat is practically closed up how can this help things? He talks nasaly all the time and I just wonder would enlarged tonsils have any part in this. He does not get sore throats often but seems to get colds upon colds.

"causing more damage" --- it can block passage of air, but what do you mean by damage?

see an allergist for your son's allergies.  shots (desensitization) can help.  medicines can help, such as antihistamines, singulair, nasal steroids.

Enlarged tonsils and adenoids could have an impact since they can obstruct the airway.
Removal of the tonsils and adenoids won't change his allergies.
