Turbinate Surgery

Hi - Has anyone had turbinate surgery? I am having trouble breathing freely, and my ENT suggested that this kind of surgery might help, but has only a 25 to 30% success rate. It consists of lasering off part of the swollen mucous membrane covering the turbinates, and/or also part of the turbinates themselves.

If you had the surgery - was it successful? How long did it take you to recover? Do you know of any other remedies I should try before having the surgery - I have tried nasal rinses (only short-term relief), and sleeping on a wedge pilllow to elevate my head (very uncomfortable, and has hardly any effect). The only thing that "clears" my breathing is cold air and exercising, but again that only lasts for a short time. Hot air does not help (unless I steam-inhale). I will be tested for allergies, but frankly, I don't think that's it. Any time I lie down (or even sit) my nasal tissue starts to swell up and I cannot breathe properly.

I appreciate any information you might have.

i have the same issue and discovered that im allergic to my dog.  allergy tests came up negative so they are not a reliable indicator for this problem.  i would think that your issue is due to allergies too.  i would suggest buying a new mattress pillow and sheets.  it could be something as basic as laundry detergent.  i would recommend going on vacation for an extended period and wear totally new clothes?  if you arent symptomatic, then its environmental.  i can be away from home for a while and be clear but if i put on a shirt that hasnt been thoroughly washed and has dog dander on it i get all clogged up again.   afrin is the only thing that works for me.  massive doses of pseudoephedrine provides some relief but not much.  good luck!

I have the same problem as you. not allergic, constant blocked nose, cold air and excercize help but do not last long.... I am considering cautery too, but I saw long-term effect is poor. 60% or more of the patietes, blockage will recur. this kind scares me of soing it
