Viral phantosmia/parosmia/anosmia

I have had the same problem with smell and taste for 8 weeks. I am not sure if it was caused by a dental problem or from a virus infection. I had both. I have gone to a Dentist, an ENT, a Neurologist, and most recently an oral surgeon.  The virus I had was about 2 months prior to this problem. I took an antibiotic called Factive. About 6 weeks later I noticed everything had a sickly sweet smell. After about 3 weeks of this, one day my tooth/gum bled and from that point on everything tasted horrible too. I immediately thought it was dental related and did have a partial root removed. My dentist put me on Amoxycillin for 10 days. It did not help. I then went to an ENT and had a CT scan. They did not see a break in my sinus lining. Although they did see membrane swelling. I decided to wait a few more weeks and nothing changed. I just went to my Neurologist for an annual MRI I have for another problem, and he saw a small andenoma on my Pituitary. Still not sure if that is related, as it was there a year ago too with no change.  I then went to the oral surgeon and he has put me on Clindamycin antibiotic, hoping it is a sinus bacterial infection of some kind.  I have not tried prednisone. I can only eat very cold, sweet foods or strong tomato tasting soups or food. I eat a lot of strawberry toaster pop-ups, and fruit loops, and my favorit new food is Coconut shrimp with a citus sauce. Hated shrimp before this. Anyway you have my deepest sympathy for what you are going through. Could you please post anything new you find out about this.  I am desperate to find a treatment for this. Thank you!   (Peggy)

Update on my previous post.  After 11 months I still have Parosmia - which is a distortion of smell that also affects how food taste.  I have not found a cure. Right now I am in the wait and hope it gets better. I found a great support group on Yahoo. The people in this group share their problems, and treatments with each other and are very supportive.  You need a yahoo account. Go to groups and search on "Parosmia and PHantosmia - Smell & Taste Disorders".  Good luck! Please let me know if anyone comes up with a treatment that is effective for Parosmia!
