Voice horse, sudden vomiting - help!

My husband has been though the mill this past year.  Among other procedures, he's had a bronchoscopy to rule out problems with his bronchial tube.  He also had tests to rule out lung cancer.  Everything came back normal.  The reason for these test is that he has a partially collapsed lung with plural effusion on the left side.  The final verdict was trapped lung.

The doctor also found that his kidneys weren't up to par and put him on Diovan.

Right after starting the Diovan (which turned out not to be the culprit) he started to cough.  He coughed some during the day, but at night he had to take Robitussin or the coughing and mucus kept him awake.

About 5 months later he went to his cardiologist for a checkup and it was decided he had mild congestive heart failure.  The doctor put him on Aldactone 12.5mg daily.

The cough went away immediately.  But then something else happened.  His nose started to run a lot and his voice started getting horse.  The nose runs most of the time.  The horse voice happens often but not all the time.

One day he was eating lunch, feeling fine.  I heard a funny gurgle in his throut then all of a sudden he vomited.  Lots of mucus.  He told me he felt fine.  He was not nauseated at all, but he felt like there was something in his throat.  After he threw up the feeling was gone.  He did say that he'd had the feel on and off before, just never told me.  This happened two days after starting the Aldactone.  We told the doctor.  He said he didn't think it was related and to continue the med and see how it goes.

That was a month ago.  Since then his nose is running a lot.  It's almost like he has a cold, but he doesn't.  Yesterday the same thing happened.  Right in the middle of lunch he threw up.  Afterwards he told me he felt just fine.  He said it wasn't like the usual feeling when you vomit.  No gut wrenching spasms, it just all came up.  Again he said he'd been feeling a little like there was something in his throat.

To me it sounds like there is something in his throat that makes him gag and then vomit.  The vomiting makes it go away (for a while).

What the hell could this be??  My husband has forbidden me to contact the doctor.  He is totally sick of doctors and tests.  He did have a physical last week and everything was fine.  He mentioned the running nose.  The doctor said it was chronic rhinitis.  She offered to give him an Rx for it but he refused.

Could rhinitis be causing the vomiting?  Any connection to the plueral effusion and collapsed lung (which is chronic)?  The meds?  Congestive heart failure (very mild the cardio told us)?

I am so upset I couldn't sleep last night.

Understand your husbands feelings - most doctors are untrained in diagnosing!  Sinus dripping CAN bring on vomiting if there is an abnormal amount of mucus dripping into the stomach + make it seem like you have reflux but it is from the sinues all the time.  Then again, reflux CAN cause the sinus problems...believe it or not.  I'd try over-the-counter Prilosec for 2 weeks and see if it is any better, along with NeilMed Sinus Rinses (cost is about $25.00 to try both).  Good luck!
