Over this past summer I developed a craving for sunflower seeds, but after eating them for several days I developed a white, swollen patch on my tongue. It wasn't painful, just annoying because I felt like I had something stuck to my tongue.
I quit eating the sunflower seeds, but it took about six weeks for the white patch to completely go away.
A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the patch was growing again. It started out about pea-size but now is about the size of a quarter. It is not painful at all, and doesn't scrape off. It doesn't bleed or have any sort of discharge.
I went to the doctor on Monday and she looked in my mouth, used a tongue depressor for about 2 seconds and said it was thrush. I've had thrush before (several years ago) and this does NOT feel like thrush. She gave me a script for an antifungal which I finished yesterday, and I notice no change AT ALL on my tongue, in fact it seems worse today than it did yesterday.
Combined with this patch on my tongue is this feeling like I have hair in my throat, as well as a tingling sensation on my tongue, in my throat, and in the area of my soft palate. My throat and epiglottis aren't swollen or red, but I have noticed that some of the larger taste buds on the back of my tongue are quite swollen. The patch on my tongue is white and 'puffy', soft to the touch, there's no knots or bumps in it. It does not sting or burn if I drink hot liquids, nor does it hurt if I eat spicy foods. As I said before, it doesn't scrape off, and it doesn't bleed if I scrape at it.
I have not recently been on any antibiotics, nor have I used an asthma inhaler. There has been no change in my diet. I am not a diabetic, and the last time I had a TSH done was a year ago and it was fine. I don't have HIV/AIDS or any other STD's. As far as I know I'm not immunocompromised in any way.
I'm a 30 year old female.
Now that I've given entirely too much information, does this sound familiar at all??
