choking during eating

My son, 24 years of age, has recently started choking on food while he is eating.  It happens when he eats rice, pasta, steak, etc.  He will chew and when it goes down his throat, it catches somehow and he has to go to the restroom to dislodge the food.  I reviewed hianal hernia, but this doesn't seem to be the symptom as it happens while going down the throat, not while in the stomach.  Can you tell me what might be occuring and if this could possible require surgery or just medication?  Of course, I understand this will definitley need a diagnosis, but I just need some name for this.  Thank you.

It's called dysphagia with solids.  It's important that he go get evaluated right away since it could get stuck in place causing him to be unable to breathe.
