fungus?parasite? bug? insanity?

I am writing because I saw a similar question to my current malady on this site and I'm hoping you can help. I have had a daily chronic problem with a crawling sensation in my inner ear. Recently the sensation has  progressed to the outer ear and up to the top of my scalp( does not cross over to the right side though)  it has begun to spread to  the left temporal area of my face, near my ear . Its hard for me to say if the scalp sensation is "referred" or not because the crawling sensation always begins in my inner ear.  I was initially concerned because I had been living and working for the past 3 years in the tropics ( the Pantanal and Amazon in Brazil) and "bugs in the ears"   is a common malady among the river people with whom I worked, but I also know there are so many fungal and parasitic diseases there, I couldn't begin to name them all in English. Fungal ear infections were rampant and difficult to treat there, but were usually characterized by pain and odor, which I don't have.  I'm back home in the states and these symptoms  didn't start until 3 months after I got home.  An ER doc friend of mine took a look with an otoscope and said he couldn't see anything ( i.e. a bug) in there and said to fill the canal with  mineral oil at night, which I did for a week . No help. The crawling sensation is the worst in the evening and oddly enough , is very persistent while in the car --whether as a passenger or as a driver. But it happens at all times of day. I very much appreciate any insights you could give me.
