in hospital with ear infection

hi all im new here.My brother has an external ear infection.He had pain about 7 days ago and it went away after a day.It came back on thurs and he went docto who gave him ear drops.Pain was so bad he went er that night and they gave him whit (sorry think thats the name)gave him pain medication and was sent home.He woke up this morning and whole ear and ear canal was swollen closed swelling had travelled down face and around ear.He called er nd they told him to go back in and they admitted him.He got an xray and ct scan of his head but because its late we are still waiting on results and we wont know till tomorrow.Im just being a protctive and anxious sister im just wondering is this something we should be worried about.Thanks for your help
