probably laryngeal reflux : I am worried

by maried2007, Feb 28, 2007 12:00AM
Hi
I have a lump in the throat feeling for a month now. I first thought it was my allergy but after many trials (going out of the house, seeing an allergist, taking nasonex, atrovent, clarithin, nasal wash) it seems that my allergies are not to blame. My doctor thinks this is probably gastro laryngeal reflux and I will start proton pump inhibitor.

My concern is about complications of this condition. I have to say I am an anxious person and this throat problem has drive me nuts for the last months because of my fear of choking. Since my doctor told me this is probably reflux I read a little bit on the internet about it and when I see the complications  (laryngeal spasms, subglottic stenosis!) I am totally freaked out.

Is it possible to have these complications after only  a month of reflux? Are these complications frequent? Are there anybody here with laryngeal reflux that can help me to calm down because I am totally stressed out by this condition I have that can make me choke if I understand correctly?

thank you. this forum is really great.

I have allergic rhinitis and nasonex, atrovent, clarithin, nasal wash help me a lot.

I had GERD (reflux / heartburn) all the way thru medical school, and was always freaked out that it could be my heart.  Now I know it can feel the same but isn't due to my heart.  Heart strain usually worsens with exerting oneself.

Try the proton pump inhibitor, it helped me a lot.  Adding a antacid like tagamet, zantac, pepcid at night if the PPI isn't enough, is a good strategy for some people.
