smelling impairment.

smelling impairment.

So i thought i had a case of chronic sinusitis. which i did about 3 years ago. never really paid it much notice past the antibiotics i took. a while later i didn't have the same level of postnasal dripping or any of the other symptoms except for a slowly degrading sense of smell. until at one point i realized that i no longer have a sense of smell.

now i do get hours of a day every not so often where i smell, sometimes better than others. as a general rule, i don't smell.

i went to a who was supposedly one of the BEST ENT's in Jordan. did a limited CT scan for my sinuses. and this time, the doctor says "Mazz, you sinuses are CLEAN! you don't have any problems with your sinuses."
i try explaining that i got all the symptoms, the headaches, the sinus pains, the post nasal dripping, the works!

he still says that it's not sinusitis. so i say fine, i don't have sinusitis. what do i do to smell again?

he explains that it's not sinusitis and that i have a slightly deviated septum that wouldn't cause all the problems i'm having. and has no indication of why i can't smell...

i'm sure i have a case of something that creates all those symptoms.

any ideas?
i really want to smell again! i want to be able to sleep normally and wake up normally and for crying out loud, when my girlfriend wears a nice perfume on a dinner date, i want to smell it!

Sometimes a viral fever can knock off the smelling nerves which 'cables' into the nose from its roof. A road traffic accident too can snipe the nerves and lead to a 'no smell' situation. Absolutely no smell. Unfortunately, no treatment has been found effective here.

But in some situations, you are able to get smell once in a while. Like when the mucosa in the nose is swollen so that the 'sniffed' air doesn't reach the upper vault of the nose,(where the mucous membrane is supplied with the sensing nerves). The mucosa (the lining of the nose or sinuses) can get swollen by infection or allergy etc.

Or in case of deviation of the nasal septum The deviated nasal septum can divert the 'air-current' and one may not be able to smell always.

Can you copy the CT pics with a digital camera and post them online in some website, I may be able to take a peek and comment.

Best rgds,

Thomas Antony

Thank you so much Tom, i'll take a photo of the CT pic and post the link here!

recently the mucus is turned clear and has been for the past week! so there is no infection as far as i can tell. also, the swelling above my eyes has gone down but i still can't smell!

but at least theres progress. i'm just force feeding myself and staying clear of smoke!
